The Randwick Asylum for Destitute Children was first occupied in 1858, but had previously been run as the Ormond House by the Society for the Relief of Destitute Children. This collection is of admission and departure records of children taken into the Asylum between 1852 and 1915. By 1867, the Asylum could house 800 children. It took in children who weren’t eligible for the orphan schools and whose parents weren’t capable of caring for them. The children stayed in the Asylum until they were either 19, apprenticed, married, or boarded out.

Remarks about family are often provided and in the departure information other siblings can sometimes be found. The records contain:

  • Name
  • Birth year
  • Age
  • Admission date
