Historical Background

RMS Titanic sailed from Southampton, England, on 10 April 1912, bound for New York. The ship took on additional passengers at Cherbourg, France, and Queenstown, Ireland, and set off into the Atlantic with approximately 2,228 passengers and crew on board. The ship struck an iceberg shortly before midnight on 14 April in the North Atlantic about 400 miles south of Grand Banks of Newfoundland. Titanic sank in a matter of hours with a loss of about 1,517 passengers and crew.
