Juifs exterminés prés de Šabac, Serbie, 1941

In November of 1939, the leaders of the Hechalutz Zionist youth organization in Austria organized a group and attempted an "illegal" immigration to Palestine. Over the course of several months, they made it as far as Sabac, where they were stopped by the Yugoslav authorities who were afraid of clashes between them and the ethnic Germans who were also traveling. There they waited for authorization to proceed. Then, in July of 1941, the Germans moved in and occupied Serbia. The refugees were moved to an old fortress that was later turned into a concentration camp. In October, many of the men were taken to a pit near Zasavica and shot. Several months later the women were murdered in a gas van and buried in Jajinci.

This collection contains approximately 1,000 community records about these people and lists their names, birth date, and occupation.
