Records of births, marriages and deaths at sea were kept by the masters of British ships. Following the Merchant Shipping Act of 1854, they were obliged to send on the information recorded relating to the birth or death at sea of English, Welsh, Scots and Irish people (as well as anyone else aboard) to the Registrar General of Shipping and Seamen.

Marriage entries, which start from 1854, record:

  • name of the ship
  • official number
  • names of both parties
  • ages
  • whether single, widow or widower
  • profession or occupation
  • fathers' names
  • professions or occupations of the father
