Historical Background

Târgu Neamţ is located in the Moldavian region of Romania. Jewish life in Târgu Neamţ takes back to the second half of the seventeenth century. By 1899, 3,671 Jews lived in the town and made up 42% of the population. The Jewish population declined in the interwar period, with a total of 2,538 Jews in 1941. The Jews of Târgu Neamț were craftsmen, merchants, textile traders, innkeepers, and other professionals. In 1940, Jewish merchants and professionals were forced to sell their property at a reduced price to members of the Iron Guard. In June of 1941, Jews from nearby villages and small towns were forcibly moved to Târgu Neamţ.
