The original property records are primary historical sources that may have information that can't be found in other records. The original documents are housed at the Queensland State Archives in Runcorn, Brisbane.

Keeping property records is one aspect of land administration in Queensland, and the state was divided into counties, parishes, pastoral districts, and land agents' districts, in part, to facilitate better land record keeping. Counties were established as 40-square-mile units. Boundaries were changed in 1901 to increase the number of counties from 109 to 319, and parishes were typically 25-square-mile areas created within the counties. Pastoral districts were created to manage leased pastoral runs and holdings. Land agents' districts were created to administer leases for farming and grazing land.
