In the first half of the 19th century, more than 70,000 convicts were transported to the island of Tasmania, established as Van Diemen’s Land in 1825. (The name was changed to Tasmania in 1856.) This collection includes baptism records for children born to female convicts in “female factories”, namely the Hobart Town House of Correction.

Details on the record may vary from year to year but can include date of birth, date of baptism, child’s name, parents’ names, transportation ship, and by whom the child was baptized. The father's name is rarely in the record; searches will produce more results if a father's name is not included in the search.
